Raising the profile of health and safety at work
Article Abstract:
The UK government is determined to place increased emphasis on health and safety at work. It will give strong support to the work of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and its Executive (HSE), and will give careful consideration to the future funding of these bodies. A key role of the government with regard to occupational health and safety is to establish standards for employers, with the HSE being responsible for enforcing these. It has requested the HSC to give advice on what can be done to encourage courts to take stricter action against employers who flout health and safety legislation.

Large or small be 'office-wise'
Article Abstract:
Small and medium-sized companies in the U.K. are finding it increasingly difficult to keep pace with the plethora of health and safety directives and are thus placing their office employees at risk. For those who do seek advice, there are many information packs available from the Health and Safety Executive, including a booklet on health and safety law entitled 'Officewise'. Meanwhile, insurer Eagle Star has launched a telephone helpline to give advice to small and medium enterprises.
