Redefining the field of European human resource management: a battle between national mindsets and forces of business transition?
Article Abstract:
Human resource management in Europe is experiencing a conflict between cultural heritage and economic, social and political forces. Far from streamlining human resource management in multinational corporations, the implementation of the Single European Market brings additional human resource management problems and further complicates its practice. Cultural and institutional factors, differences in business structure and system, and factors relating to the roles and competence of human resource professionals have led to distinctive national patterns of human resource management in the region. A more dynamic and change process-oriented framework of human resource management in Europe which highlights the main factors that have brought about these national patterns is introduced.

Adapting human resource planning in a changing business environment
Article Abstract:
A study of 137 firms was conducted to analyze current personnel planning practices and to determine how the practices can be adapted in changing organizational environments. Research results indicate that most firms used forecasting techniques, such as succession planning and personnel inventories, for human resource development. Results also indicate that personnel planning gained acceptance as part of the management planning process in organizations during the 1980s. Additionally, personnel planning will most likely focus on issues related to strategic planning in the 1990s.
