Britain's training problems: the search for a strategic human resource management approach
Article Abstract:
Britain's training problems, in part founded by endemic industrial decline and a general lack of competitiveness (due to six reasons), are examined. The lack of British investment in human resources is discussed as having negative consequences on this situation. British human resource managers are faced with many obstacles, including both structural and attitudinal, to their implementation efforts for remedial change. A new UK national project is introduced that seeks to identify the sources of resistance to needed change, and to permit successful interventions, based on the concept that strategic change management is critical to an organization.

Challenges in the management of diversified companies: the changing face of corporate labor relations
Article Abstract:
The response of large, diversified companies to changes in labor relations is examined. Labor relations remain a strategic function for diversified firms because of their direct effect on corporate ability to manage multiple enterprises, and because labor represents a large portion of a company's costs. The goals and policies of labor relations departments are not being linked to long-term corporate goals as a whole, however.
