Relocation services buyers' guide: five-year trends in relocation: coping with change
Article Abstract:
Surveyed relocation administrators say they face three major challenges: delays in the processing of mortgage applications, losses taken on sales in depressed housing markets, and increased relocation costs. Declining home mortgage interest rates cut the need for mortgage interest differential programs. Replacing or changing these programs can save employers money when higher interest rates return. Relocation administrators expect the next five years to bring continued housing-related problems, increased employee resistance to relocation, the need to hold down relocation costs, and complications occasioned by new tax laws. These laws will enhance the popularity of home equity loans and favor increased home values. The buyers' guide lists these kinds of services: auto transport, international relocation, management consulting, mortgage banking, move management, moving and storage, publications, real estate firms, relocation counseling-placement, relocation management services, referral services, software systems and temporary living quarters.

Grading school systems to match transferees' needs
Article Abstract:
Helping relocated employees find the most suitable school system for their children is complicated by the number of options available in most metropolitan areas and the differing needs of relocated employees. Relocated employees and their personnel managers should approach public school selection by: (1) developing a profile of the ideal school system sought, (2) compiling a list of school system alternatives within a comfortable commuting range, and (3) evaluating schools on the basis of some quantifiable data, such as school size, school system size, records of student performance, accreditation, school system awards received, school system budgets, special education courses available, vocational-technical expenditures by school system, student-teacher ratios, school system per capita income, school system tax base, and property values of homes within the school system's jurisdiction.

Relocation: refinancing home mortgages reaps real rewards
Article Abstract:
In view of the present low interest rates, refinancing of home mortgages is a sound financial practice. Mortgages should be refinanced if the new rates are at least two points lower than the old rates, if the cost of refinancing will be recovered in two years, and if the homeowner keeps the new mortgage for at least three years. The points of the new loan should also be considered. The best place to refinance a mortgage is with the present lender, either by modifying the old loan or getting a new loan. One should also find out what the lender's additional fees will be. Relocation coordinators and personnel managers can help their employees with refinancing and offer several options to them.
