Retirement benefit developments in the Asia-Pacific region
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand differ in their approaches to providing retirement benefits. Hong Kong's retirement system is anchored on personal savings, family support and voluntary employer-supported private-sector funds while Australia has seen several policy changes in its retirement system since 1971. New Zealand, for its part, is turning from defined benefits, pensions and integrated benefits to defined contributions and lump sums. Singapore's Central Provident Fund, although not without its disadvantages, is seen by many experts as the ideal model for a country's retirement system.
