Richard Newton: head of human resources, BP Group
Article Abstract:
Richard Newton holds the position of human resources (HR) head at the British Petroleum Group (BP). A lawyer by training, Newton joined BP in 1970 and worked in legal positions for a decade before moving up into general management. His previous positions include being chief executive of BP's international trading and refining unit from 1987-1990 and being chief executive for BP Exploration's global gas unit from 1990-1992. Newton was appointed to his current position in the autumn of 1992. Newton's background may well explain his perspective of the HR function's place within the BP Group. According to Newton, HR policy needs to be closely linked to the needs of line management and should have as its ultimate objective the enhancement of corporate performance. Thus, Newton views HR's role as that of an internal consultancy that guides and supports line management in the implementation of BP's decentralization and empowerment programs.

Michael Obsaldeston
Article Abstract:
Ashridge Management College chief executive Michael Osbaldeston has been at the college 17 years, progressing from a researcher to the top of the institutional hierarchy. Osbaldeston believes that experience is vital to management teachers, and feels that prospective teachers should not embark on a teaching career until their 30s or 40s after gaining business experience. The reputation of Ashridge was founded upon its provision of in-house consultancy and tailor-made courses to business. Osbaldeston believes that this type of involvement between business and business education should progress from merely providing training towards a full partnership.
