Sexual politics
Article Abstract:
The confluence of power struggle, job insecurity and diversity-oriented programs has considerably heated up the tension between the genders in the American workplace. In their pursuit of power, women have become antagonistic towards men who they feel are preventing them from gaining higher positions. Meanwhile, men are threatened by women who gain significant power because they feel that women will only abuse their power. The growing instability of Corporate America as a result of restructurings is further fueling the fire of hostility. Both sides feel that the more the other is promoted, the less chance the other group will prosper. Even HR professionals have unconsciously fanned the flames of antagonism with well-meaning programs on diversity, sexual harassment and family training which tend to make men more defensive and women victimized. To end this battle, the problem should be acknowledged and an environment where people can express themselves freely be created.

Are health incentives disincentives?
Article Abstract:
The rising cost of medical care has encouraged a number of companies to use financial incentives and disincentives as means to encourage employees to adopt healthier lifestyles and consequently reduce medical expenses. Johnson & Johnson, for one has a 'Live for Life' program that provides employees participating in the health awareness program with money to purchase items from a 'Live for Life' catalog. At U-Haul International, a five dollar additional health insurance contribution is required of smokers, and persons who are extremely overweight or underweight. The effectiveness of these programs in reducing health care expenditures by encouraging health awareness, however, has yet to be determined. Legal and ethical issues further add to the ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of health incentives programs.

Options alleviate employee qualms about relocating
Article Abstract:
The recessionary economy and the lack of job security are weakening employees' resistance to relocating. According to the 1992 Relocation Trends Survey, more than three-fourths of all respondent companies reported little or no objection to employee relocation. Still, there remains a good number of employees who are unhappy about relocating because of such considerations as loss-on-sale of a house given the soft real estate market, higher cost of living, and the possibility of the employees' spouses giving up their jobs. To overcome such concerns, many companies are offering relocation assistance programs such as loss-on-sale reimbursement, job replacement assistance programs for spouses of employees, and programs that help relocating employees find good schools for their children.
