Survey looks at what's new with 401(k) plans: USA
Article Abstract:
Hewitt Assoc recently conducted a survey among employers regarding 401(k) or salary-reduction savings plans. Data collected showed that 72% of employees participate in the plan with majority choosing to invest in guaranteed investment contracts despite the more commonly offered equity funds. Prime rate-based loan interest rates and daily credit earnings may account for the popularity of 401(k). Employers, on the other hand, still fail the Tax Reform Act's actual deferral and actual contribution percentage tests without first adjusting employees' contributions.

1991 pension fund performance figures released: UK
Article Abstract:
UK WM Company's 1991 report shows that pension fund performance made a strong comeback after the previous year's equity crash. Totalling 241 billion pounds sterling, the bulk of the amount came from US overseas bonds and equities, which accounted for 21% of returns. A steady trend in pension fund income was also observed, prompting fund managers to make appropriate divestments or reinvestments of their assets. However, the 1992 performance chart is feared to show zero growth due to the expected decline of overseas income from pension funds.

Average cost of providing pensions up 5% in 1991: UK
Article Abstract:
UK pension costs posted a 5% increase in 1991, according to a recent survey by William M. Mercer Fraser. The survey also showed increases in average post- retirement pension assumption and funding level. Company disclosures are still at a minimum, and a majority do not mention the Barber Judgment. Pension expenses are still determined by the projected unit method. These and other findings are contained in a 40-page report published by Fraser.
