Teaching responsibility to poor performers
Article Abstract:
Supervising the 'externalizing' employee represents a major challenge for managers. Externalizers see life as being outside the sphere of their personal control. Traditional personnel management approaches such as threatening discipline, placing the externalizer into a 'sink-or-swim' situation, applying external rewards, and reasoning with the employee are unlikely to be effective. Low-esteem, externalizing employees can be encouraged to assume responsibility by insisting that they take credit for their success as well as their failures. The externalizer should be made to understand that all achievements stem from efforts, skills, and good fortune. Externalizers should be given tasks for which they are qualified.
