Teams in Australia's automotive industry: characteristics and future challenges
Article Abstract:
Australian's free trade policy has decreased Australia's share of its automative market, with import tariffs on vehicles cut to 25% in 1996 from 57.5% in 1985. The highly competitive automotive industry has had to improve productivity and product quality to maintain its market share and safeguard jobs. Management skills played a large part in the re-organisation of the industry, introducing leadership structures and control systems to improve output, while at the same time maintaining worker moral and job satisfaction.

The determinants of absenteeism: evidence from Australian blue-collar employees
Article Abstract:
Recent research into absenteeism has focused on the development and testing of a causal model of absenteeism. This work was based on a sample of unionised, production workers in the Australian car industry. The research identified six factors which have a significant impact on absenteeism. Workers who regard their tasks as routine and repetitive tend to have higher than average levels of absenteeism, as do those who feel that it is acceptable to take sick leave days for reasons other than illness.

Employee acceptance of organizational change: the role of organizational commitment
Article Abstract:
Recent research based on a survey of 761 employees at a large public hospital in the state of Victoria, Australia, has tested a causal mode which predicts employee acceptance of organizational change. It was found that factors including good industrial relations, job motivation and organizational commitment will boost employee acceptance of organizational change. In contrast, acceptance will be negatively affected by role conflict and union membership, among other things.
