The diversity paradox
Article Abstract:
American corporations have failed to address the individual needs of their employees in their efforts to address the issue of discrimination in employment. The American workforce is becoming increasingly heterogeneous, and companies desiring to provide equal employment opportunities have ended up replacing equality with sameness. Employment laws created for the purpose of eliminating discrimination and providing the means for advancement have become the very same barriers to maximizing the potential of every employee. This diversity paradox can be resolved by broadening the criteria for gauging employee performance, reevaluating corporate strategies in relation to equal employment opportunity objectives and considering the inherent strengths of employees based on their cultural background or gender in recruitment procedures.

TRW S&D strives to be the preferred employer
Article Abstract:
TRW Space and Defense is responding to the tightening labor market by positioning itself as a preferred employer in its two major labor markets, Washington, DC and Southern California. The company is offering its employees, in addition to good salaries and benefits, a greater role in the organization, a share in leadership, career mobility, and an enhanced quality of life. The company used data gathering sessions in order to elucidate its current employees' needs, and is now implementing programs to address the needs of its employees in five areas: on-site child care; on-site fitness facilities; leadership and management development centers; dependent sick leave; and housing assistance.
