The new-collar workers and unions' changing roles
Article Abstract:
Union membership among the American labor force has shrunk from 40 percent to 18 percent, and this has spawned much discussion about the reasons for this decline and the future of unions. Despite claims that unions are no longer needed and workers are leaving unions due to their "take and no give" philosophy, unions memberships are declining because workers are not as frequently choosing to join the unions (not because people are leaving their unions). An AFL-CIO study resulted in a plan for unions of the future, based on the mentality of the 'new-collar' worker. The union of the future: will bill members for annual (rather than monthly) fees; will not encourage workers to strike; will more frequently provide members with value-added services themselves (rather than forcing employers to provide such services); and will not place as much emphasis on worker seniority. The implications of these new union strategies are described, for both the worker and the employer.

GTE managers on the move
Article Abstract:
The global telecommunications company GTE Corp is one of the leading proponents of additional business exposure for its key managers and executives through the process of reassignment. These developmental assignments serve as a key strategy of GTE's management development and education function and staffing and development arm. The reassignments are intended to prepare managers and executives for future positions in senior management. GTE's management development efforts have thus resulted in the movement to different positions of almost three percent of all its executives and professionals in 1991, despite the depressed state of the economy and downsizing that took place at GTE. The business exposure program is a cooperative effort spearheaded by Thomas W. Green of management development and Bill T. Macauley, director of staffing and development.
