Trade union membership in Britain, 1980-1987: unemployment and restructuring
Article Abstract:
Trade union membership fell in the UK during the 1980s, especially among men and blue collar workers, as opportunities shrank in industry and the state sector. Trade cycles and unemployment also weakened trade unions, as did a trend towards employing people in smaller units of production. In some areas, high levels of membership were maintained, however. The effects of legislation on union membership need to be separated from trade cycles, but probably legislation did have an impact in the 1970s, as a factor promoting growth.

From Bermondsey to Canary Wharf: the social context of change in industrial relations, 1880-2000
Article Abstract:
A survey of the variables which influence the economic status of the work force in the UK indicates that real income, in terms of amount and stability, is a key factor, as is consumption. Real income and consumption are in turn influenced by housing, social security and public service availability. While poverty, and incomes which were being reduced in real terms, were issues at the start of the 20th century, the effects of an ageing population are likely to have a major impact by the year 2000.
