Two dental plans show cost savings at Hewlett-Packard
Article Abstract:
The electronic measuring device manufacturer Hewlettt-Packard Co offers its employees the option of availing of either a pre-paid or a fee-for-service dental plan. Hewlett-Packard's fee-for-service dental package, called the Regular Dental Plan (RDP), offers employees with the right to choose their dentist but limits coverage. The RDP provides employees or their dependents with $1,500 in total annual maximum benefits at a reimbursement rate of 80% for preventative care. Under the pre-paid dental option, called Dental Plan II (DPII), employees receive greater coverage in exchange for the elimination of the right to choose dentists. Employees or dependents are given maximum benefits worth $2,500 and a reimbursement rate of 100%. The two dental plans are being offered in six company locations with notable increases in enrollment in the DPII. A savings of about 20% per employee has been noted from the newer DPII plan.

Data base integrates HR functions
Article Abstract:
Westin Hotel Co has integrated its human resource functions through new computer data base software. The implementation of the integrated system has resulted in savings of more than $100,000 in processing fees and has reduced personnel by seven full-time positions. The data base integrates the human resources functions of Westin's US hotels with its payroll, benefits and compensation data. More importantly, the database makes trend analyses and long-term strategic planning possible. The advanced processing capabilities of the data base will assist Westin in its reorganization and allow the company to identify areas wherein human resources can be fully utilized.
