Video tests are the new frontier in drug detection
Article Abstract:
The computerized impairment video test serves as an alternative to traditional drug-testing programs which involve the analysis of urine or blood samples. This new assessment method focuses on employees' impaired performance rather than on the testing of their substance abuse. It has proven to be superior to traditional drug-testing methods in terms of cost, timeliness and accuracy of results, and overall liability. One computerized impairment test that is available in the market is Performance Factors Inc's Factor One. This 30-second test was designed to detect any impairment of motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Such impairment tests are not meant to replace drug testing. On the contrary, the use of impairment testing in conjunction with drug testing may prove to be more effective than the use of just one method.

The selection process begins with a visit to the production facility and the viewing of a demonstration reel. Better control is possible when all work is done at a single location. A formal client approval process ensures an active role in decision making. Budgets vary, but ballpark estimates and per-minute rates should be discussed.

Video display terminals (VDTs) may cause harm to the health of the user. During 1981, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a major study of VDT use and the effects on employee health. Included are symptoms usually cited: shaking, irritability, soreness in the neck, headaches, stress, eyestrain, skin rashes, and back pain.
