Voices of HR experience
Article Abstract:
Interviews with the heads of personnel departments of four of the best-run companies in the US reveal many of the successful ways companies are dealing with challenging human resources issues. Dupont Co senior vice president of employee relations H. Gordon Smyth feels the company has made efforts to become more flexible by creating a program where individual departments determine competitive compensation levels. American Express Co senior vice president of human resources Rennie Roberts believes her company has attempted to meet the needs of its female employees by implementing a family care program. IBM Corp director of personnel development William Stopper says that IBM has worked to remain competitive by downsizing and cost cutting. Personnel helped in these efforts by enhancing the firm's retirement formula in 1987 which resulted in a voluntary reduction of personnel. Wal-Mart Stores Inc director of the people division Von Johnston believes that its employees are crucial to the company. Wal Mart has an extensive drug screening program as part of its hiring process to attract quality workers.
