Let employees carry the ball
Article Abstract:
Managers can motivate their employees to give their best performance by making them aware that they are fully responsible for the outcome of their jobs. The guidelines for communicating the idea of 100% job responsibility to employees include clearly explaining to new employees the full range of their positions; using performance appraisals as a communications tool; and making employees the boss of their own jobs. The steps for managers to take to keep themselves apprised of their job responsibilities and the duties of their employees, and to send employees the message that they are being treated as adults include remaining well-informed about developments in their profession; encouraging employees to make their own decisions; and giving credit to deserving employees.

Use anxiety to motivate
Article Abstract:
Motivation of employees is a key personnel management challenge. It is suggested that managers are not actually motivators, but change agents whose job it is to make workers dissatisfied with current performance in relation to that which is desired. Workers tend to resist instability, preferring to perform tasks in the same way. One way in which the manager can overcome employee resistance to change is to stimulate the individual to look for fulfillment of higher-order needs such as psychological growth, achievement, and recognition. Managers should be careful not to disturb provision of 'hygiene' or maintenance needs such as working conditions, salary, status, or job security.
