Why Irish firms are smiling
Article Abstract:
Ireland is seeking to address the problem of rising unemployment through a concerted effort of the government, industrial and agricultural sectors, and trade unions. The effort takes the form of a social partnership that aims to make the provision of more jobs a national priority, and consequently acknowledges the sacrifice of other top social and economic issues such as the leveling of wages and the improvement of the current state of industrial relations in the pursuit of this cause. Three companies are among the frontrunners in revolutionizing personnel management in Ireland through the adoption of more complex and innovative employee involvement, recognition and communication policies. These companies are Team Aer Lingus, Guinness and Amdahl. Providing the necessary support to the effort to reduce unemployment in Ireland is the introduction of employee protection legislation.

From Belfast to Brixton: could new monitoring measures cross the Irish Sea?
Article Abstract:
There is a long history in Northern Ireland of segregation and polarization between Protestants and Catholics. Unemployment rates among Catholics are much higher than among Protestants. The government has become increasingly involved in addressing this inequality. A system of monitoring has been in effect for about three years; resulting in more Catholics employed in the public sector, but with little effect in the private sector. The MacBride Principles, aimed at US companies operating in Northern Ireland, call for affirmative action for under-represented groups, but can also be considered reverse discrimination. A study by the Policy Studies Institute identifies 11 factors that contribute to employment differentials between Catholics and Protestants, and legislation heavily influenced by this study is expected in 1989.
