Diversity characterises employers' use of temporary working
Article Abstract:
The use of temporary workers in the UK has expanded rapidly in recent years, according to a survey conducted by the Industrial Relations Services. Most temporary workers were employed in secretarial, clerical, or administrative positions. The survey cited the need to cover peaks in workloads as the most common reason for hiring temporary workers. The survey found little evidence to show that employers were using temporaries to maintain a "core" and "peripheral" workforce.

Regulation of land use and product markets restricts competition and keeps productivity low
Article Abstract:
Low labor productivity is the reason for the United Kingdom's position at the bottom of the G7 output table in terms of output per person. The reasons most frequently mentioned for the country's economic underperformance, low capital investment and poor skills, are often due to market restrictions and are thus secondary effects rather than the root causes of the problem. Key industries with untapped growth potential include automobiles, food retailing and hotels.
