A detailed analysis and reexamination of survivorship insurance use and planning
Article Abstract:
Split-dollar survivorship insurance is no longer considered an exceptional benefit because of the economic benefit charge at the death of the first spouse but, with appropriate planning, can still provide benefits. One method of planning is to attach a first-to-die rider that gives the surviving spouse some liquidity and can be used for a dependent or indigent child as well as to pay the corporation's interest in the policy. Planners should also consider the negative aspects to using the marital deduction if the policy increases in value after the first spouse's death.

Helping a client who is charged an extra premium or denied insurance based on health history
Article Abstract:
There are various methods for obtaining life insurance at a favorable rate for a client with an adverse medical history. A second opinion from reinsurers can be requested in the case of an in-house determination that the client is a substandard risk. This would apply when dealing with large companies with very high retention limits. Modified life or universal life policies, lower premium kinds of whole life, might be worth considering. Perhaps instead of a Table rating the insurance company will charge a flat extra premium for a certain number of years.

Opportunities and changes affecting life insurance that estate planners should expect in 1993
Article Abstract:
Changes to life and disability insurance products which may affect estate planners in 1993 are likely to be both financial and structural. Costs associated with life insurance are likely to go up and life insurance companies will be more strictly scrutinized by the rating services and by state regulators. The merger trend in the life insurance industry will intensify. There will be an increase in life insurance products directed at the senior citizen, and variable annuity and variable life products will continue to appeal to clients.
