A revolving door leads to the top
Article Abstract:
William P. Barr is the senior vice pre and general counsel for Stamford, CT's GTE Corp. He is trying to consolidate his hiring of outside counsel but is not afraid to try a new firm. The selection of outside counsel is marked partly by a firm's reputation. His legal department is divided into business units which each report to him and he also has a headquarters staff. A great deal of regulatory work is accomplished in-house. Barr feels that one of the greatest changes in corporate counsel practice is the increasing quality of in-house people.

He doesn't shop around for lawyers
Article Abstract:
Dennis J. Broderick, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Federated Department Stores Inc., heads a legal department of 24 lawyers. In 1986, the attorneys for the various chains became part of the corporate law department. Litigation is not done in-house and is by far the most significant portion of the work done outside. Volume-based retainers are considered the best form of cost control. Broderick considers Federated's emergence from bankruptcy to be an example of the Bankruptcy's Code's blessings.
