Small firms that hire must heed mix of laws; sole practitioners and new firms must consider the insurance, tax and employment consequences
Article Abstract:
Small law firms hiring must keep labor and tax law issues in mind. Federal employee-rights laws such as the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and state ones on hours-of-labor are examples. Detailed tax laws govern employer tax returns, but employee benefits are usually up to each employer. Law firms should already carry malpractice insurance, but will need to purchase new coverage for new employees.
