A directory of 50 leading commercial banks, their in-house counsel and the law firms they choose most often to represent them as outside counsel is given. The same kind of directory of diversified financial institutions and savings institutions is also given.

An increase in business support for mediation and arbitration is discussed. A survey of the Fortune 1000 in 1997 reports 80% to have used arbitration. A dramatic increase in numbers is expected following the Supreme Court's decision in Circuit City Stores v. Adams that labor arbitration is legal.

The NLJ Client List: Who Represents Financial America
Article Abstract:
The list of law firms used most used as outside counsel by the financial services industry was substantially the same in 1998 as the year before. Except for minor changes, the list is very similar to the first National Law Journal supplement on the subject in 1989. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher and Flom remains the firm most cited by diversified financial services companies, while Sullivan & Cromwell is the top choice for banks. Washington, DC's Elias Matz has for two straight years been the leading firm for savings institutions. Detailed tables are given.
