Hard-fought, big-money judicial races; U.S. Chamber of Commerce enters fray with ad money
Article Abstract:
The permission granted by both federal and state law that groups contributing to judicial elections can conceal the identities and contribuitons of their members as long as the advertising bought does not directly advocate a judicial candidacy is discussed, and contentious elections in state and federal courts are surveyed.

Mixed results for C of C; fails to oust Ohio justice but backs some winners
Article Abstract:
The mixed results of the $10 mil Chamber of Commerce campaign to influence the elections of several state supreme court judges in the 2000 election are discussed. The most high-profile effort, to oust Ohio Supreme Court justice Alice R Resnick, was the biggest failure. The Chamber will continue advertising in future elections.

AGs blast $10M sweeps settlement; court challenge expected in Publishers Clearing House case
Article Abstract:
The state attorneys general suing Publishers Clearing House for mailing letters which were artfully worded solicitations to buy products but so deceptive that consumers believed they were about to win untold amounts of cash charge that a settlement offered by the company is as much of a sham as the sweepstakes mailings. The US Senate addressed the problem by passing the Deceptive Mailings Elimination Act in mid-1999, legislation which the House has yet to consider.
