Greedy associates envy i-bankers
Article Abstract:
Young New York lawyers often complain about their salaries and one place for them to do so is a new Yahoo! chat room, the Greedy Associates Club. The membership of this club is more than 175 lawyers and increasing daily. Law students have their own Greedy Summer Associates Club. New York's high cost of living undoubtedly causes some of this discontent, but 'The Overspent American,' a new book by Harvard economist Juliet Schor, argues that young people aspire to the unreachable lifestyle they see on television.

Women's numbers rise at the bigger law firms; even their share of equity partnerships has climbed
Article Abstract:
Women attorneys have increased appreciably in numbers, and they have gained more quickly in equity than in nonequity partnership. The share of women attorneys at the National Law Journal 250 rose from 26.6% to 30.3%, and the proportion of women partners continues increasing, from 13.6% in 1996 to 15.7% in 1998. At law firms with nonequity partnership tracks, the percentage of women lawyers with equity went up from 54% in 1996 to 61% two years later. Women attorneys seem to be reaching the point where promotion depends on skills rather than gender.
