Oral arguments via video; despite some glitches, 3rd Circuit experiment wins praise for saving money
Article Abstract:
The 3rd Circuit is conducting a one-year experiment linking judges in Philadelphia with attorneys in Pittsburgh for appellate arguments via video technology. Both sides seem pleased so far, the attorneys citing savings in both time and money for clients. Judges say they concentrate better because of not having to contend with courtroom distractions. The circuit plans to televise all oral arguments from the Western District of Pennsylvania during the project year.

Saving trees, reducing waste; two states consider rules requiring court-filed papers to be recycled
Article Abstract:
The California and Florida bars have proposed rules requiring court documents to be printed on paper that is at least 50% recycled. The California rules were proposed to the California Judicial Council by the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund. This change would save not only trees but also the resources used to mill them, and the demand for recycled paper would expand.
