An ounce of prevention
Article Abstract:
Four excellent diagnostic software utilities are available for the Macintosh that will diagnose hardware, system level and program difficulties; offer preventative suggestions; and improve overall performance. Abbott Systems' $65 CanOpener 3.5 application retrieves vital information such a text and graphics from most damaged or corrupted document files. MicroMat Computer Systems' $119 TechTool Pro provides thorough system-level diagnosis with customizable component tests that can range from simple to comprehensive. Symantec's $95 Norton Utilities 3.2 features individual modules for diagnosing and fixing both hardware and software problems such as fragmented hard drive files, lost files, and corrupt hard drive data. Finally, Symantec's $65 AntiVirus for Macintosh 4.5 (SAM) proactively combats computer viruses with the program's Scheduler. The company also evaluates all viruses as they occur via its AntiVirus Research Center and posts all cures on its Web site monthly.
