Automating TQM
Article Abstract:
Financial services professionals should create their own Total Quality Management program that involves serving current clients better and discovering why those who left were not satisfied. A portable computer can help serve clients better because specialists can have access to all the available knowledge when meeting with clients. The computer can also help trace dissatisfied former clients and keep track of the firms' customer retention rates. Improving customer service and therefore customer retention is an important use of resources because it helps the overall profitability.

Assessing the worth of new technology
Article Abstract:
Financial service providers can not depend on a return-on-investment analysis alone to decide what types of technology should be incorporated into their business. They should consider, to varying degrees, a set of value criteria and risk criteria before making a purchasing decision. The value criteria are the return on investment, strategic match with goals, competition, information systems and the use of information. Risk criteria include the risk to current organization structures, uncertainty over task responsibilities, and technical uncertainty.

Protecting against PC viruses and other risks
Article Abstract:
Financial service professionals keep many important files on their personal computers and adequately protecting that information is becoming essential as computer viruses are increasing in frequency as well as other data loss problems. Six steps to protect data are: installation of a virus protection program, frequent file backup, use of a surge protector or uninterrupted power supply, protection of fax/modem lines, use of passwords and possession of data recovery utilities.
