Patents pending? Lawyers, inventors battle over new technologies
Article Abstract:
Patent lawyers disagree on whether or not too many patents are being issued in new technologies. One side claims that excessive patenting slows research by making scientists fearful of litigation and of high costs in the form of licensing fees. The other side claims industry would lose interest in research and development without the economic benefits of a 17-year patent. Inventors seeking patents must have their inventions meet legal requirements for utility and some wonder if researchers in new technologies want patents before utility is clear.
