Bailing from the bench; judges worry pay gap may drive their experienced peers into private practice
Article Abstract:
Judicial salaries flatten as those in law firms rise, and Congress failing to approve cost-of-living raises promised to federal judges in 5 of the last 6 years came in for US Supreme Court Chief Justice William H Renquist's disapproval in his 1998 annual report. Federal judge David R Hansen notes that salary neglect since 1993 has cut the real value of federal judges' annual wages by $22,000 over that period. Another federal judge worries that money pressures will mean the federal bench no longer represents a spectrum of the bar.
