Looking for the good guy; witnesses don't have to be pretty - just simple and direct
Article Abstract:

Reveal the real witness; don't let other parties show only their best sides to the jury
Article Abstract:
Ways for a litigator to reveal the opposing party's bad character through his examination are discussed. The character battle should never include revealing embarrassing information with no relevance to the litigation about the witness's private life.

Tactical timing: it is just as important to decide when as whether
Article Abstract:
Attorneys should use the trial rather than the appeals process as a time to get evidence admitted. Even if the appeals court agrees that the admission or exclusion of the evidence at trial was an error, it will qualify as harmless unless the appellate judges believe it affected the outcome of the trial. The decision on the timing of the voir dire examination can also be an evidence issue. Voir dires exist to keep evidence out or even to exclude a witness, but they are usually ineffective and the argument works better at cross-examination.
