Blocking Beck: union dues and politics ten years after the decision
Article Abstract:
The Harley Beck legislation, a law which prohibits labor union officials from using funds for political purposes, was issued by the US government in recognition of the individual rights and constitutional power of the labor sector. However, the law has made insignificant contributions to the overall welfare of laborers due to the incapacity of government leaders to enact the legislation. The Clinton administration has been lax in implementing the provisions of the Beck law, allowing union leaders to spend funds without proper accounts, refuse to file legal charges against employers and jeopardize the country's arbitrary system.

Regulation, unions, and labor markets: in OECD countries, higher unionization equals higher unemployment
Article Abstract:
The differences in labor market structures and policies are examined, specifically in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Data from the countries showed that central planning of labor markets raises unemployment rates. It was also shown that increasing the costs of hiring nonunion workers reduce the relative costs of unionized workers. When all workers are unionized, however, it will not be possible to transfer the cost of higher wages for union members onto other workers. In this case, the higher wages will merely lead to higher costs.
