The rapid rise of Boies, Schiller and Flexner, which competes nationally for both top law school graduates and top business clients, is discussed. This litigation boutique does not shy from controversial, risky class-action plaintiffs and revenues for 2000 were in the $50-75 mil range.

Tempting work; the status and number of temp lawyers are growing rapidly

The period following the recession of the early 1990s saw working as a temporary employee come into its own for lawyers, when the market was full of unemployed lawyers and firms found they had overhired associates. Such work no longer carries the stigma it used to and is a rapidly growing segment of the staffing industry, with analysts pegging it at $300 mil to $500 mil annually, with an annual growth rate of 25 to 40%.

Florida's Greenberg Traurig PA is among the fastest growing US firms and has grown by lateral acquisition rather than mergers. Greenberg has more than tripled in size using this method, opening 10 offices in the 1990s and doing so without acquiring any debt or sacrificing profits. The firm has grown with four strategic niches: securities, real estate, info-tech/ entertainment and international. Along with Florida, the gateway to Latin America, the hubs are Washington, DC, the world's Internet center and New York, the world's financial center.
