Ill. death-row inmate takes appeal to 'Web'; his lawyers say he wasn't at the scene and make their case on the Internet
Article Abstract:
Girvies L. Davis has a World-Wide Web page with an appeal for last-minute support as his virtually unprecedented death sentence approaches. Davies was convicted of murder in a 1978 shooting despite the state's claim that he was actually outside the house where the murder occurred. The killer was never charged in that case. Lawyers with Jenner & Block created the Web page at the suggestion of associate Brian Murphy, to drum up public pressure on the governor as he considers a clemency appeal.

Federal defender system finally is reviewed
Article Abstract:
The federal courts' system of indigent defense is under review for the first time since its inception in 1964. The Criminal Justice Act of 1964 called for 'on-going review' of the system, but the Judicial Conference's Committee to Review the Criminal Justice Act is the first attempt to study this issue. Fees and standards will be the most contentious areas of the study.
