Stay safe with the top down; convertible bonds give holders options to keep on the right road

The pros and cons of convertible bonds are discussed, which holders can convert to shares, usually of the issuer's common stock, based on a preset exchange rate. Thus, holders can share in the stock's gains when the market is doing well.

Catching up with college costs; prepaid tuition plans offer peace of mind, but beware of the pitfalls

College tuition increases have made undergraduate education one of a parent's greatest foreseeable expenses and demand advance financial planning. Many private universities now cost $21,000 per year, and costs have risen at twice the rate of inflation for the past decade, doubling in that time. Prepaying college expenses is one option, but upfront premiums and other drawbacks reduce its attractiveness. Investing in stock mutual funds and, as the beneficiary nears college age, shifting into zero-coupon bonds, may be best.
