Clinton, Dole rate low on civil liberties; the president is seen as slightly more vigilant, but they both get rapped for playing to the crowd
Article Abstract:
Neither Pres Bill Clinton nor presidential candidate Bob Dole boasts a very good record in civil rights, according to civil libertarians, with both too often choosing the route of political expediency. Clinton's signing a welfare reform bill which endangers poor people and Dole's shepherding the bill through Congress is but one example. Observers find both candidates wanting in the area of criminal justice reform, touching on right to due process and equality before the law. Civil libertarians are relieved that affirmative action has been preserved so far.
