Copyright lawyers razz adverse 6th Circuit ruling; court finds copying for education no breach. Some prefer the New York ruling
Article Abstract:
Copyright lawyers are split over the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals' Feb 12 ruling in Princeton University Press v. Michigan Doicument Services allowing copying of copyrighted materials for educational use. The decision conflicts with that handed down in 1990 by a federal district court in Manhattan in Basic Books v Kinko's Graphics. At least some copyright professors support the new decision, noting GA's atty general reached the same conclusion recently, and say copyright lawyers are in copyright holders' pockets and oppose any expansion of the fair use doctrine.
