Courthouse standoff in Indiana
Article Abstract:
Judges at the federal courthouse in Hammond, IN are in a dispute with the General Services Administration (GSA) about the proper location for a new courthouse. Hammond and particularly the downtown area have been adversely affected by the depression in the steel industry, and the judges disagree with a GSA plan to locate the new courthouse downtown. When Hammond was designated by law as the center of the western division of Indiana's Northern District, the city was the area hub, but Lake and Porter counties have become the area's most populous and perhaps the courthouse should be there.

Trade case appeal draws a crowd as test of RICO
Article Abstract:
United States v Ashman involves an appeal of 10 Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) members who were convicted of RICO charges. The defense, headed by Robert H. Bork, claims that the government held violations of CBOT regulations and misdemeanor violations of the Commodity Exchange Act to be offenses worthy of felony mail and wire fraud charges, and that these became the predicate offenses for the RICO convictions. Bork claims the RICO stature is too vague and that its application here is unconstitutional.

Innocent attorneys not covered
Article Abstract:
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that malpractice insurance covering partners and associates of attorneys who are found guilty of committing fraud at the time the policy is written may be voided, leaving the innocent parties without protection. This decision overturns a US District court ruling in the case of Home Insurance Co v Dunn. Law firm owner Lawrence M. Cooper was found guilty of embezzling clients funds, and his lying on the application invalidated coverage for the entire firm.
