The article profiles James C Diggs, senior vice president and general counsel of PPG Industries Inc, the world's largest producer of vehicular coatings and also manufacturer of other glass products. Diggs' deputies are responsible for matters including labor and employment, acquisitions, environmental health and safety, and insurance and product safety. Diggs notes that PPG is not immune to the consolidation in many of the manufacturing industries it serves, and states that competition is also intensifying.

Rulings that companies did not violate ERISA breach-of-fiduciary duty charges with its pension fund investments which turned out badly used ERISA's affirmative defense rule Nabisco and Unisys had relied on several expert opinions when making their investments. The Unisys case also noted that the company included employee-participants in the decision-making process and gave those employees bad news, letting them opt out of the plan.
