Critical issue: EU enlargement
Article Abstract:
The expansion of the European Union (EU) to include its central and eastern European neighbours will be particularly important to business, creating an economic area of some 500 million consumers, against the current 370 million. Of the 12 economies seeking to join the EU, only Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia fail to qualify as 'functioning market economies', although most are a long way from incorporating the acquis communautaire into their national laws. The issue of EU enlargement is further discussed.

Critical issues: EU enlargement
Article Abstract:
A further stage of EU enlargement is likely to occur early in the 21st century, with around 10 central and east European countries (CEECs) expected to join. Candidate countries have to meet conditions laid out in the Copenhagen summit and the criteria are not yet satisfied. There are also major obstacles for existing member states such as preparations for budgetary effects of enlargement.
