Debates need minor players
Article Abstract:
An election cannot really be called free when only the two candidates put forth by the major parties can speak. The founding fathers believed a market place of ideas is necessary in a democracy. The government adds to the rigidity of the two-party system by placing the debates under the control of commissions whose membership is drawn from the two major parties. Their decision to include only candidates who are realistically electable in the debate leaves out minor-party candidates. The debates are no longer a marketplace of ideas.

Courtroom jousts now done by committee
Article Abstract:
The trial lawyer as paladin and lone crusader may be giving way to groups of lawyers for the defense and the prosecution or plaintiff, due to increasing complexity in the law and in scientific evidence. The great trial lawyers of the past have always used supporting casts, but they have also always been the sole voice in the courtroom, maintaining control and building a relationship. The success of OJ Simpson's defense team, uncoordinated as it often was, may indicate the way of the future.

Abortion decision undercuts rule of law
Article Abstract:
A federal district court decision to use jury nullification to acquit protesters who violated a court order not to block the entrance to an abortion clinic, pointing out that the protesters acted out of religious conviction, violates the duty of a judge to apply the law to the facts he sees before him. The decision disparages the moral force of the original judicial order and attacks other judges who might ignore abortion protesters' moral prerogatives.
