Defense bar up in arms; lawyer's arrest is criticized by colleagues
Article Abstract:
The criminal defense bar is very displeased about the arrest of colleague Patrick S. Hallinan's arrest on drug-trafficking charges and the indictment's request for criminal forfeiture of his law firm and home. Colleagues feel the manner of Hallinan's arrest was humiliating and that prosecutorial actions in the case will demoralize aggressive criminal defense attorneys. Moreover, the defense bar charges L. Anthony White, the US attorney for the case, with being a zealot devoid of perspective in the war against drugs.

NBC, agency relationship is under fire
Article Abstract:
San Francisco US District Judge Vaughn R. Walker has ordered the Department of Justice to subpoena NBC News in US v. Chen, a case involving the largest heroin bust in the country. The judge stated that cooperation between NBC and the Customs Service created an 'agency' relationship which made it the prosecution's responsibility to issue the subpoena. NBC's policy is to provide only tapes that have been broadcast, although the subpoena covers all tapes made during the month-long stakeout.

Defense lawyer's unusual role: defendant; prosecutors are lining up Patrick S. Hallinan's clients to say he was part of a drug ring; 'consigliere' or just an advocate?
Article Abstract:
Attorney Patrick S. Hallinan is on trial for 15 federal counts of money laundering, drug dealing and racketeering. His former clients are being brought to testify against him, such as Ciro Mancuso, in exchange for lenient penalities which the defense claims makes their testimony suspect. Prosecutor L. Anthony White is trying to prove Hallinan was the head of a drug conspiracy while Hallinan contends he was just providing his clients with proper legal services.
