Educating small firms on legal technologies
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's General Practice Section is concentrating on helping its members to use technology to the best effect, as most are small-practice or solo practitioners. Under the leadership of John Clarke, the section will have two special meetings in the next year: a joint one with the Native American Bar Assn, and one focusing on the quality of law practice and of life for general practitioners. The section has helped make Lexis more available to small practices, and is working with AT&T on a lawyers' computer.

Supporting firms that strive to donate services
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Law Firm Pro Bono Project helps larger law firms launch and evaluate their pro bono efforts and operates the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge. Many large law firms have in recent years increased the profile of their pro-bono work, formalizing its oversight and often creating a full-time coordination position. Some have established signature programs, usually focusing on a particular legal clinic or subject, and these report higher staff morale and the chance to involve more non-lawyer staff.

Addressing implications of digital signatures
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's Section of Science and Technology has developed rules and model laws for digital signature verification through its Electronic Data Interchange and Information Technology division. These are designed to apply to various legal systems, though American ones could be served by a US Model Digital Signature Act. The division has also worked with experts and overseas authorities to create a CyberNotary legal specialty.
