The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act of 1999 is discussed, and provides new ways of deterring computer crimes but does not solve all problems connected with the importance to businesses of domain names.

The article discusses many possible changes to the Internet domain name system.Proposals include transforming it from one backed by the federal government to a private, international one, along with the addition of new top-level domain names and a new dispute resolution procedures. These have not all been publicly released, so it is difficult to evaluate the system fully.

Expansion of trademark law yields trickier search; development of unusual marks, dilution law and the Internet complicate clearance process
Article Abstract:
The complexities added by Internet domain names, trademark dilution law and unusual trademarks have complicated the trademark clearance process. The situation adds greater certainty to the protection available for conventional marks but more uncertainty to trademark searches before adding new marks to a portfolio. A limited search can be especially risky when clearing Internet marks as it is difficult to know how the new Web-related products and services should be defined.
