First steps in the law: a look at how four young attorneys spend their first year after graduation
Article Abstract:
Four young lawyers reflect on their first positions after graduation from law school. These positions include clerking for a federal district judge, being a first-year associate at New York's Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, serving in the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps and serving the poor in an office of Oregon Legal Services. The court clerks feels her position offers sufficient variety even though most of her working day is spent at the computer, the Skadden associate feels challenged, the Navy lawyer reports on the lengthy orientation before starting work, and the Legal Services lawyer reports on efforts to sustain morale in view of the federal budget cuts.

Article Abstract:
Michele Johnson and Karen Brown are two young lawyers who have returned to their places of origin for pro bono legal services, to New Jersey's Passaic County Legal Aid Society and the Tennessee Justice Center respectively. Brown has taken on local authorities to secure adequate living conditions for those in low-income housing, while Johnson, a co-founder of the Tennessee Justice Center, brought a class action against Tennessee health officials on behalf of about half a million children.

The commercial lease is one of the most important contracts for a law firm and can become its greatest liability as well. Lease problems can impact a firm's profitability and growth potential as well as clients' impression of the firm's stability. Commercial leasing attorneys can offer key expertise and due diligence should take place before a lease is signed. Permissible uses and the key clauses of commercial leases are discussed.
