Georgia lawyer faces execution; Atlanta public defender fights for a law school buddy accused of murder
Article Abstract:
Georgia public defender B. Michael Mears is representing former law school classmate William H. Lumpkin on charges he murdered Stanford White, a real estate agent who had bought Lumpkin's foreclosed house. Lumpkin, who had been negotiating repurchase of the house when White was found dead, was charged with White's death on the basis of statements from Lumpkin ex-client Augustus Williams. Although most of the Atlanta legal community appears detached, Mears hopes to successfully defend his classmate.
