His words boost tobacco cases: when Jeffrey Wigand talks, tobacco's foes listen
Article Abstract:
Former Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp executive Jeffrey Wigand's testimony on industry knowledge and discussions could shape litigation against the tobacco companies. Seven investigations and federal grand juries are apparently investigating related questions, and many prosecutors and plaintiffs' lawyers hope Wigand can cut through confusing documents to show juries that the industry lied and conspired. Wigand was vice president of research and development for B&W from 1989 to 1993.

Smoking foes start to use new ammunition
Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry in the form of the Liggett Group is facing setbacks in three cases, one in California, one in New Jersey, and one before the US Supreme Court. The New Jersey case, Haines v Liggett Group Inc, includes an opinion by US District Court judge H. Lee Sarokin that prima facie criminal fraud evidence exists. The US Supreme Court case involves federal pre-emption of litigation, and the California case is a civil fraud suit that mirrors Judge Sarokin's opinion.

BCCI case dwindles, but goes to finish
Article Abstract:
The prosecution in People v. Altman alleged that attorney Robert A. Altman was bribed by the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) to deceive regulatory agencies, thus allowing BCCI to influence and then purchase First American Bankshares Inc. However, the judge dismissed half of the counts against Altman after the prosecution presented its case. The evidence has been described as entirely circumstantial.
