The prevalence of sexism in trial practice, even in 1999, is discussed. Women attorneys are making some progress, with a record 10 lead counsel in the upcoming National Law Journal 1999 Verdicts roundup. Reasons for difficulties include the still prevalent stereotypes, as well as the stress and intensity of trial work.

Lawyers in love say 'I do;' many in the profession share their mating calls
Article Abstract:
Surveys of lawyers' personal lives show a great many of them to marry other lawyers, and highlights of a survey of the dating habits of 842 single lawyers run by the national dating service It's Just Lunch are suggestive. A third of the lawyers reported dating lawyers at their own firms, and women were less interested than men in dating lawyers of their legal specialty, but more willing to date non-lawyer staff members. Statistics are given.

The article claims that overbilling by big law firms is an endemic problem and that the attorney discipline system has reserved lenient treatment for big firm lawyers, while disciplining small firm ones more harshly. Statistics on attorney discipline seem to bear this out. Lisa Lerman has written a study on claiming large-scale billing fraud at large law firms.
