In the good old summertime: clerkships aren't just for big firms - solos and small firms can benefit, too
Article Abstract:
Small law firms and law students both have much to gain from summer clerkships. Summer clerking should not be seen as an experience only large firms can provide. In fact, smaller firms can provide law students with a broader understanding of all the components of practicing law and managing a law office. Illinois attorney John Hattery started hiring a clerk each summer because of vacationing staff and attorneys. He states that law clerks are cost-effective, but he notes that it is important to provide research projects and mentoring to make the experience as valuable as possible.

Solo but not alone: mentors' guidance can keep inexperienced lawyers on track
Article Abstract:
Mentors can help inexperienced sole practitioners and sometimes prevent malpractice. They can be a way of obtaining guidance in a new legal area or serve as sounding boards about potential new clients. The ABA and other bar associations across the US have a variety of programs to meet the needs of sole practitioners. Organized programs which are typical include telephone mentoring guides, peer review programs, and matching programs based on sex and ethnicity.
