International bar group meets; but finding a consensus proves elusive
Article Abstract:
The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA) used its 37th annual meeting for discussions of human rights questions, of the impact of technological innovations on the practice of law, and of whether lawyers should be able to practice internationally. The discussions of human rights were spirited, with dissent on proper terminology for a proposed charter on minority rights. Many female members of the organization opposed classifying women as a minority under the charter, fearing marginalization of their concerns would result.
